Protesters have tried to block ICE agents from detaining migrants in California
Protesters clashed with federal agents during an immigration raid on the largest cannabis farm in California on Thursday.
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers arrived at Glass House Farms south of Camarillo in Ventura County in a convoy of military vehicles.
Protesters, some carrying Mexican flags, tried to block the road, to which the agents responded by firing tear gas.
Several demonstrators threw rocks at the ICE vehicles, and at least one person was filmed apparently firing a gun towards the officers. There were no reports of injuries.
At least 10 people were detained in the raid, according to a local ABC affiliate.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told ABC that the agents were executing a warrant at the farm. "Our brave officers will continue to enforce the law," the spokesperson said.
Glass House Farms, which owns a massive cultivation center, bills itself as the largest legal cannabis grower in the world. In a statement on X, the company said it has "fully complied with agent search warrants."
US Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott said that ten children were found at the farm, all of them illegal migrants and eight of them unaccompanied. "It's now under investigation for child labor violations," he wrote on X.
California Governor Gavin Newsom's office condemned the "inhumane" raid and singled out US President Donald Trump's top adviser Stephen Miller. "Instead of supporting the businesses and workers that drive our economy and way of life, Stephen Miller's tactics evoke chaos, fear and terror within our communities at every turn," the statement continued.
Trump has made a crackdown on illegal immigration one of his signature policies, accusing his predecessor, former President Joe Biden, and the Democrats of profiting from an influx of migrants across the border with Mexico.
Newsom and other top Democrats, in turn, have labeled Trump's methods, including a promise to carry out the largest deportation in American history, dangerous and unlawful.
