SYDNEY, NSW, Australia - Stock markets in Asia were mixed on Thursday, with Japanese and Australian shares driving lower, while in China and Hong Kong gains were being recorded.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 fell 84.46 points or 0.29 percent to 28,776.16.
The Australian All Ordinaries dipped 17.80 points or 0.23 percent to 7,689.40.
In Hong Kong the Hang Seng gained 257.99 points or 1.08 percent to 24,254.86.
China's Shanghai Composite added 35.47 points or 0.98 percent to 3,673.04.
The U.S. dollar was little changed. The euro was steady at 1.1328. The British pound drifted up to 1.3285. The Japanese yen was unchanged at 113.62. The Swiss franc firmed a touch to 0.9209.
The Canadian dollar inched up to 1.2664. The Australian dollar was higher at 0.7180. The New Zealand dollar strengthened to 0.6816.
Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrials gained 35.32 points or 0.10 percent to 35,754.75.
The Nasdaq Composite advanced 100.07 points or 0.64 percent to 15,786.99.
The Standard and Poor's 500 added 14.06 points or 0.31 percent to 4,701.21.
