Horse racing dates as far back as the 17th century, and if we're honest, they were races happening in Britain long before then. Since then, it has grown from being a simple form of entertainment to a more organized and well-planned event. In the mid-'70s, the first rules for the games were set out, and before the end of the next century, horse racing became one of the most popular and intriguing sporting events.
Even now, in the first few decades of the 21st century, about 10,000 races happen every year. With each season, sports betting is at its prime. Want to know more about the blossom of horse racing through the years? Keep reading to see their most prestigious horses and how they made history.
What makes this next horses' story so sensational and thrilling is the fact that he had bad feet. That should have naturally made it harder for him to race; however, he was a three-time winner of the Grand National award. Many had their doubts, but after his winning streak, you can guess that the bets started coming in as he made his way to the top of bookmaker offers. Even after retirement, his sheer willpower was honoured by many. He even went on to win the BBC person of the year - award.
Arkle was an Irish horse that made history. He won 22 out of the 25 steeplechases between 1962 and 1966. Many say Arkle's most remarkable performance was in 1965 when he won the Callagher Gold Cup. He stole the show being the disadvantaged horse because of his weight. However, in the last few minutes, he jerked into action, leading with a 17 seconds course record. He also won the Gold Cup at Cheltenham in 64' and 66', the Irish Grand National and the Hennessy Gold cup in 1965.
Here is a horse that practically took every race personally. He always thrilled the audience and kept the betters on their toes. He's one of the horses that worked their way to the top, with every loss or tie pushing him to exceed every limit. And exceeding our expectation he did, he ended up with 34 victories, including King Goerge VI chases and the 1989 Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Back in the day, sports betting was no less popular than it is today. This next horse was the one horse who garnered many bets during the races. Eclipse, a racehorse, was even more famous for being a grandfather to many thoroughbreds today. However, in his time, this undefeated champion made winning look easy, and almost everyone in the crowd knew he was going to win.
Many horses can thrill an audience, but only the really special keep them shaking in their seats, chanting in anticipation (and sometimes covering their eyes in fear). Kauto Star was a great jumper and won the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice, and a record five King Goerge VI chases among other prestigious races.
