SEATTLE, U.S. - Amazon, which launched its first cashierless food store in Seattle in December 2016 and has since unveiled two more such stores in the state, has now unveiled its ambitious plans.
The world's largest online retailer wants to unveil as many as 3,000 such cashierless food storesover the next three years.
According to reports, Amazon's concept, titled AmazonGo, is set to see its fourth such launch in Chicago next week.
A fift such cashierless food store is set to be launched in New York City soon too.
Meanwhile, a report in Bloomberg has stated that Amazon wants to unveil several such stores by 2021.
According to the report, if Amazon follows through with the rumored plan, it would pose a threat to convenience store chains like 7-Eleven, which must bear the expense of paying cashiers and other staff.
Each of the AmazonGo outlets use hundreds of cameras and sensorsto detect what customers take off shelves and billtheir credit card accounts automatically.
As per the concept, there is no checkout at such stores, neither do they provide any printed receipt.
However, customers must have a smartphoneapp to shop in the stores.
The stores sell an array of prepared food alongside grab-and-go convenience store grocery staples and the concept is based on cutting out the huge lines for checkout and pay, that are present at normal supermarkets.
